Singareni Expansion, Workers’ Welfare Top Government Priorities: Telangana Dy CM Bhatti

Hyderabad, Oct 17 (UNI) Telangana Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Bhatti Vikramarka on Saturday said the State government was prioritising the expansion of Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), securing new mines and improving workers’ welfare to strengthen the 137-year-old organisation and ensure its long-term sustainability.
In a festive greetings message to Singareni workers, employees, officers, trade union representatives and their families on the occasions of Bathukamma, Dasara and Diwali, he called for collective efforts to improve productivity, ensure workplace safety and help the company meet the challenges of the changing coal market.
Bhatti said the government was taking steps to expand Singareni’s operations in coal mining, thermal power, solar energy and other sectors, including the exploration of gold, copper and critical minerals.
He said coal produced by workers in underground and opencast mines was vital to meeting Telangana’s power requirements and supporting the State’s development.
Employees should ensure uninterrupted coal supplies to power plants, particularly in view of climate-related challenges such as El Niño, he added.
Stressing the need to strengthen the company’s competitiveness, the Deputy Chief Minister called for supplying quality coal at competitive prices, improving productivity, curbing unnecessary expenditure and making efficient use of machinery.
He emphasised that worker safety should never be compromised in pursuit of production targets.
Referring to the expansion of mining operations, Bhatti said the necessary approvals for the Naini coal mine in Odisha had been obtained and production had commenced. The mining lease for the Tadicherla-2 block had also been secured, while the Manuguru Prakasham Khani Open Cast-2 Dip Side block had been acquired through auction.
Efforts were under way to regain the Sathupalli-3 and Koyagudem-3 blocks, he said, adding that the government was also exploring opportunities to expand Singareni into power generation, renewable energy and the mining of other minerals.
On workers welfare, he said directions had been issued to expedite the resolution of long-pending employee issues, including around 250 to 300 dependent-employment cases. Officials had also been asked to consider discrepancies in names with a humanitarian approach and accelerate housing benefits for eligible employees on Singareni land.
An action plan was being prepared to establish Nehru Housing Colonies, while the government was focusing on replacing dilapidated quarters and improving workers’ residential colonies, he said.
Cath Lab facilities had been established to improve access to advanced medical care, and the management had been asked to distribute safety kits every six months and address concerns over income tax on perks and allowances.
Bhatti said 34 per cent of Singareni’s net profit of Rs 1,754 crore in the last financial year, amounting to approximately Rs 596 crore, had been distributed among workers as a profit-sharing bonus. Each eligible regular employee received an average of Rs 1,53,912, while contract workers received Rs 5,500 each.
He said strengthening Singareni was a collective responsibility and urged workers, employees and management to work in coordination to protect the organisation’s legacy and develop it further for future generations.
